Gutter Cleaning

Greater Melbourne

Blocked gutters on reactive clay is a foundation problem.

Blocked gutters are the top cause of roof leaks, fascia rot and overflow damage we see across Melbourne homes. We hand-clear every gutter, flush each downpipe, and check the flow before we leave — with before and after photos so you can see exactly what came out.

The Brief

Everything worth knowing.

Straight answers, no fluff. Read what applies to your home — skip what doesn't.

Why we hand-clear instead of just vacuuming

A gutter vacuum is fine for loose dry leaves, but Melbourne gutters get a mix of gum leaves, seed pods, silt and compacted sludge that a vacuum tube can't shift properly. We hand-clear every metre, scooping out what's actually stuck to the base of the gutter, then flush with water to confirm it runs clean to the downpipe. It takes longer but it's the only way to know the job's actually done.

Downpipe flush and flow check on every job

A clean gutter with a blocked downpipe still overflows in heavy rain. We flush every downpipe with water and watch it exit at the bottom before we call the job finished. If a downpipe's blocked with a build-up or a stuck leaf guard, we clear it on the spot or flag it if it needs a plumber for a collapsed section.

Single, double and triple storey homes

Plenty of Melbourne homes in Brighton, Camberwell and the Dandenong foothills are double or triple storey with steep pitched roofs. We carry harnesses, roof anchors and extension ladders rated for the height, so we're not standing on a wobbly extension ladder three storeys up. Triple-storey jobs are quoted separately once we've had a look at roof access.

Getting ready before bushfire season

CFA guidance is clear: gutters packed with dry leaf litter next to a house are an ember trap in bushfire season. We book out most of our spring calendar with clients in the outer east, Yarra Ranges and Macedon Ranges getting gutters cleared before December. If you're in a bushfire-prone zone, get in early — we fill up fast from September.

Overflow and Melbourne's reactive clay soils

A lot of Melbourne's east and north sits on reactive clay that swells and shrinks with moisture. Gutter overflow dumping water against your foundations year after year is one of the quieter causes of cracking in brick veneer homes. Keeping water moving through the downpipes and away from the slab via functioning stormwater is a cheap way to avoid an expensive foundation problem later.

Wasp and mud dauber nests — sorted, not ignored

European wasps and mud daubers love the dark sheltered space under a gutter overhang, and we find nests on a good chunk of jobs, especially over summer. We remove and treat nests as part of the standard clean at no extra charge — we're not leaving a nest behind for you to discover with a ladder in hand.

Before and after photos, every job

You can't see your own gutters from the ground, so we take photos before we start and after we finish and send them through. It shows you what came out — leaves, silt, moss, the occasional tennis ball — and gives you a record of the roofline condition, including any rust, cracked flashing or loose brackets we spot along the way.

Fully insured for your peace of mind

We carry full public liability insurance, so if a tile cracks or a downpipe gets knocked while we're up there, you're covered. Ask any gutter cleaner for a copy of their insurance certificate before they get on your roof — plenty of one-man operations doing cash jobs around Melbourne don't carry any.

How often you actually need it

Most single-storey homes without many trees are fine with one clean a year. If you've got gums, pines or you're near bushland, twice a year is closer to the mark — once in late autumn once the leaf drop settles, and once in spring before fire season. We can set up a standing twice-yearly booking so you don't have to remember to call.

Gutter Cleaning FAQ

Answers before you ask.

How much does gutter cleaning cost in Melbourne?+

For a standard single-storey home, expect somewhere between $250 and $400 depending on roof size and how blocked the gutters are. Double-storey adds a surcharge for access and safety gear, and triple-storey is quoted after we've seen the roof. Fixed price before we start.

Do you use a gutter vacuum or clean by hand?+

We hand-clear the gutters and use vacuum gear for the fine debris and dust afterwards. Hand-clearing is the only way to properly shift compacted sludge and moss that's built up over a couple of seasons — a vacuum alone tends to leave the stubborn stuff behind.

Will you check and flush my downpipes?+

Yes, on every job. We flush each downpipe with water and check it flows out cleanly at the stormwater connection. If a downpipe's blocked further down and needs a plumber, we'll tell you straight rather than charging you to clean a gutter that'll overflow anyway.

Can you do double or triple-storey homes?+

Yes. We're equipped with harnesses, roof anchors and extension ladders for double-storey work as standard. Triple-storey homes need a site look first so we can plan safe access — send photos of the roofline and we'll let you know what's involved.

What happens if you find a wasp nest?+

We remove and treat it as part of the job at no extra cost. Mud dauber and European wasp nests are common under gutter overhangs, especially through summer, and we're not going to leave one there for you to find with a broom later.

Do you take photos of the job?+

Yes — before and after photos on every clean, sent to you once we're done. Shows exactly what was blocking your gutters and gives you a look at the roofline condition without you having to get up there yourself.

How often should Melbourne gutters be cleaned?+

Once a year suits most homes with few nearby trees. If you've got gum trees, pines, or you're backing onto bushland, twice a year — autumn and before bushfire season in spring — is the safer call, particularly if you're in the outer east or Yarra Ranges.
